New kid on the block: Balanze Pilates and Yoga
Lately, I’ve become a bit more adventurous with my fitness routine. I recently added in spin classes a few times a week and mixing things up with regular TRX, Power Plates and more high intensity Pilates. I’ve finally found my groove with exercise, and I’m really enjoying trying new styles of workouts as well as checking out new studios and movement spaces around Perth. So, you can imagine my delight when I heard about the opening of a new Pilates and yoga studio in Claremont. Naturally I felt it my duty to sign up for a few classes and report back…
Balanze is Claremont’s newest Pilates and yoga offering. Nestled in a small strip of shops along Stirling Highway, Balanze is accessed via a small laneway with entry through a set of beautiful glass doors housed in black chrome.
The reception space is light and bright and I am greeted by the gorgeous MJ, Owner and Pilates Instructor, who gives me a tour of Balanze. What I love most about this studio is the unique boutique feel. I get the sense that each and every client is supported on their Pilates journey here, which is so important in Pilates where individualized attention can make a world of difference to your practice.
Some Pilates studios have a tendency to creep into “gym” territory, losing focus on the clients and turning their attention to offering every variation of Pilates possible. Balanze’s focus is transformative Pilates, and that’s just the kind of vibe they have created.
Polished concrete floors and pared back white walls create a warm, inviting space featuring pops of green from stunning succulents and indoor plants dotted around the studio. Balanze houses one Reformer room, complete with Allegro Reformer beds, floor to ceiling mirrors and soft lighting. Towards the back of the studio is a multi-purpose mat room, where clients practice yoga, mat Pilates and Boxilates.
I signed up for the Intro Offer, which includes any 4 classes for $59, and booked in for: Sweat Reformer, Pilates Beats, Yoga Beats and Boxilates.
As a Reformer Pilates devotee, I was keen to discover what a Sweat Reformer class had in store. Designed for those with previous Reformer experience, this class really gets the heart rate up using props and exercises at a higher intensity than a usual Reformer class. If you’re a Reformer newbie, Balanze recommends attending the Technique Reformer class to perfect your form and build strength and balance.
My next class was Yoga Beats, a dynamic Vinyasa flow that was the perfect start to my Sunday morning. I love testing my strength and flexibility during my Yoga practice, and this class let me do just that. It was the perfect blend of movement and meditation as we chilled out with a blissful Savasana to conclude.
For those who say “Pilates isn’t hard”, let me introduce you to Pilates Beats. This class takes a regular mat class to a whole new level with amazing music and functional exercises that really get the heart rate going and targets those problem areas we all want to work: abs, arms and butt. Prepare to feel the burn as you move from mat to barre for a serious core workout!
My last class on the intro offer was Boxilates. Having only done this class once before at another studio, I knew what to expect. Or so I thought… The Boxilates class at Balanze is split into three sections which makes the class flow perfectly. The session starts with a timed boxing sequence, then we hit the mat for some Pilates work, then back up for a boxing sesh to finish.
No detail is overlooked at Balanze, herbal tea is served after class in the bright and airy reception space with fresh fruit on offer, stunning activewear and accessories is for sale and there is beautiful private change room for those en route to work.
Other class styles on offer at Balanze include: Technique Reformer, Transform Reformer, Yin Yoga and outdoor summer classes: Pilates, Yoga and Boxilates.
Balanze is the perfect fusion of focused, traditional Pilates with workouts that really deliver results. MJ and her team of passionate instructors are dedicated to helping you find your form for your best practice yet. Pay a little visit to their sanctuary and see for yourself.
